'As I reflect on my years and experience as a career coach and a mentor I once again am reminded that there is an obligation to return the favor for the kindness and generosity of the network in securing a new gig. This critical fact hit me like a brick the other day as I reached out to a couple of mentees on their successful landing following their arduous job campaigns.

Business Lessons Learned from Fishing

Waxing UnLyrical

'Five years ago you would never have caught me near a fishing pole. But, when my husband first suggested we take up fishing a couple years ago, I figured I had nothing to lose. I was pregnant with my daughter at the time, and there wasn’t much physical activity I could do. So even though I was squeamish, an activity that involved a lot of sitting seemed like a good one to me.

Bad Pitch Blog

'Thanks to Lori Russo for inspiring this post. You want to make news. We get it. You''re smart and, for several reasons, following current events when you spot a trending news story. Measuring CSR: #measurePR with John Friedman

Waxing UnLyrical

'I know. It’s been way too long since you’ve had a dose of #measurePR, be it the chat or a recap. I have no excuse other than to tell you I’ve been dealing with a whole lot of S.T.U.F.F. So even though Karelyn saved the transcript of the last chat we had, I’ve only just been able to get around to posting it here for you. I’m really sorry.

Why Public Relations Should Remember Customer Expectations

Waxing UnLyrical

'Guest Post by Adam Toporek. All great customer experiences are built upon expectations. An organization can deliver a customer experience that exceeds industry norms by a factor of 10, but if the customer was expecting one that was 11 times better, the organization has failed. How To Use Twitter For PR

Waxing UnLyrical

'When I first started writing this post, I was going to call it “How I Use Twitter.” Then I thought again, because a) I’m not as frenetically active on Twitter these days as I used to be, and b) who the heck cares how I use Twitter? So instead, I thought I’d write about how I think you can use Twitter for PR, be they your own (personal, say if you’re a business owner also wearing your own PR hat) or your clients’/organizations’ public relations efforts.

'Guest Post by Angie Picardo. There are many competent, successful business owners who are afraid of numbers. Yet, numbers are what help you to understand the impact of different tactics. Image: Rich Bowen via Flickr, CC 2.0. While you may be enamored with a wonderful strategy, if you can’t measure its impact, you can’t justify using it. Waxing UnLyrical

'Nine days from today, I won’t be getting dropped off at Dulles Airport, waiting in line to get through security, or boarding an airplane to fly to Egypt. Walk like an Egyptian… not. It’s not of my own volition that I won’t be doing any of these things. Rather, it’s because a speaking engagement that came my way several months ago disappeared rather abruptly.

Successful Libya Build 2013 Highlights Potential For a Bright Future

Waxing UnLyrical

'The news from Libya since my last post has not been great. Militias have been besieging Ministries, essentially to force the General National Congress to pass the Isolation Law barring Gaddafi era officials from public office. Skip the Inspiration. Get to Work!

Bad Pitch Blog

'At a recent event , a colleague ended his presentation with this quote from Chuck Close. "Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work." Close isn''t being arrogant. His point is waiting for inspiration is an excuse to not do the hard work. Whether it''s a plan, wrap report, blog post or tweet -- dig in and get started or you risk not getting started at all.

Monday Roundup: Facebook Tips for Business

The Long and the Short of It: What PR Can Learn From Good Short Stories

Waxing UnLyrical

'When I read yesterday’s Daily Tootzypop, I had to swallow a laugh. You see, it was titled “ In Celebration of Being Short ,” and began: “Long or short? That is my query, as I wiggle my way into my monolithic mound of bed pillows. Sounds kinky, huh?…” I’ve been watching Sex and the City recently, usually an episode or two before I turn in for the night, so you can see where my mind went.
