How long have you been in journalism and how did you get started? I started writing in eighth grade for my middle school newspaper in 1999 and was hooked from there. What advice do you have for PR people that want to pitch you? Don’t pitch story ideas, pitch sources. The biggest thing for me is timeliness.

Covering baseball, it’s all about the new rules right now, especially adding the pitch clock to a sport that is famous for having no clock. I also regularly get proposals from doctors to write about sports injuries, using them as experts on whatever the specific injury might be. Go through my editors! Tell us a little about yourself.

I also write about mobility and transportation topics, including pedestrian safety. The craziest story from the standpoint of realizing I was in the middle of something really big was probably the 2010 Enbridge Oil Spill. If a story topic interests me, I expect I will report and write a better story.

Freelancing means you never know what you’ll be writing about on any given day, so my portfolio has broadened in surprising ways since starting this freelance version of a career back in 2017. That’s a broad request, but it ended up being a lot of fun to track down and write. I wrote my first story when I was 16.
