The shiny new toy is an ethical minefield. ChatGPT and Playground are among the first artificial intelligence (AI) applications using a text-based web interface that uses the GPT-3 language model. It’s a huge amount of data that includes books, websites, and Wikipedia. A terabyte is approximately 85 million pages of text.

Any time YouTube finds a questionable piece of video content, it will add a text box linking pertinent “factual” information supplied by Wikipedia. The truth is we have unleashed a beast of sorts with Web 2.0. One thing is certain: the fight against fake news is not only a technical problem, but is also a moral and ethical one.

Given the rising popularity of user-generated content, some fake news creators might fancy themselves journalists of a sort, without the actual ethics or experience that a real journalist would have. Even people who see the headlines but don’t click on them will remember their content and may perpetuate the fake news without meaning to.
