Advertising has shifted to internet mediated platforms such as Google and Facebook, and print sales have declined. The number of journalists has fallen by a quarter from 23,000 in 2007, to 17,000 in 2018. It has given rise to so-called ghost newspapers produced by groups such as Newsquest and Reach.
