I wrote about how I got started running in my blog post entitled “On a Mission.” Running a 5K is one of those things that, for me, felt just hard enough to truly be a challenge to myself while still being something I actually believed I could achieve if I worked hard enough. Why bother?

I don’t know – and didn’t think to ask – if he spent any time as a PoW, but I imagine being shot down was experience enough. Until his health started failing (he suffered two heart attacks), he awoke religiously with the sun, had an impeccable work ethic and, above all, put family first. My grandpa declared.

The biggest PR lesson here – because what is this campaign, if not an exercise in trying to raise awareness? Simply assuming that because someone has been judged as having a high degree of online influence, others will do what they ask, isn’t enough. If this is really about inspiring people, why not highlight those people?

If you are trying to get an edge and have figured out a connection to the manager of the department in which you hope to work, certainly see if someone can put a word in for you.
