Speakers and topics for Lockdown Unconference (1-2pm, 26 February)

You’re invited to join a new Unconference learning and development event. Better still, come and share an idea.

The inaugural Lockdown Unconference will explore diversity, junior talent during lockdown, reporting dashboards, and the regulation of social media platforms.

  • Why it's time to play the race card

  • Nurturing tomorrow's leaders during lockdown

  • How to build a PR measurement dashboard

  • An unregulated eco-system: the darker side of digital

It takes place from 1pm-2pm on 26 February. Here’s a link to sign-up if you’d like to join the audience.

My objective was to bring together a group of interesting people to lead discussions around a variety of topics related to marketing, media, and PR.

Thanks to Barbara Phillips, Isobel Camier, Andrew Smith and Gay Flashman for offering to speak for five minutes on each of their topics followed by a 10-minute Q&A with the audience.

The event was originally conceived within a Facebook community of practice that I created during the first lockdown. It’s grown to 1,500 people and become a lively hive mind, newsroom and source of information, help and support. You’d be welcome to join.

We’ve moved the event off Facebook due to the popularity and so that we can provide management and support. On that note, thanks to Koray Camgoz help with management and production.

My intention is to run Unconference sessions monthly. If you’d like to pitch to speak at a future event please follow this link.

Here are the four topics and links to each of the speaker’s biographies for the February event.

Why it's time to play the race card

When organisations are planning corporate strategy diversity and inclusivity (D&I) should be at the centre. And racial equity should be at the centre of diversity and inclusivity strategy. People in the PR industry still avoid including race in D&I activity in the hope it will disappear. It’s time to play the race card. We need to talk about racial equity as the only D&I card to draw.

Nurturing tomorrow's leaders during lockdown

The pandemic has proved a tough time for junior talent as demand has reduced. But now, more than ever, agencies need to be supporting and nurturing new starters. Working from home has seen juniors become to-do list jockeys. The industry needs to nurture curious, value focused, bigger picture thinkers, but how? Investing in junior talent is the future of the industry.

How to build a PR measurement dashboard

PR reporting isl often seen as a weekly or monthly scramble to pull together disparate sources of data, wrangled into a Word, PowerPoint or PDF document, with some textual commentary that gets emailed to clients with seconds to spare. This session will cover how to produce smart PR reports and dashboards and turn them into value added business drivers.

Andrew Smith, director, Escherman

An unregulated eco-system: the darker side of digital

The storming of the US Capital demonstrates the power of unregulated platforms in organising protest. The response from the tech platforms? Banning the vocal - and untruthful - Trump who they have been happy to host for many years. How can we balance defending our democracy with supporting free speech? And how do communicators tackle this 'wild west' of platforms and networks?
