There has been a lot of noise around Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk recently, with them both agreeing to fight each other in an MMA fight. Even the Italian Government has chimed in to offer the Colosseum as their battleground.

With all this going on, we decided to take a look to see which social media platform is better for advertising. Meta vs X (Twitter) – who is going to come out on top?

Meta’s Ads Manager

Meta (the owner of Facebook) used to run the show when it came to social media marketing, but with constant changes to policies and legislation, it’s not quite the same as it once was.

More reach with meta? Facebook alone has 2.3 billion active monthly users, whereas X (Twitter) only has 450 million, so to start there is more potential reach to your audiences on Facebook.

Then, looking at Meta’s Ads Manager itself, we believe it to be the easiest to get to grips with, which makes it a great option for those who are just getting into social media marketing. Each option has a very clear explanation of what it is the ability to customise what data you want to target makes it one of the strongest ad tools out there.

Which company is best to use meta for social media advertising?

Another great benefit of Meta is that it is suitable for all advertisers, due to it having such a large audience you can target (mostly) any interest, company or demographic. It also has ad metrics for so many different campaign types, so it is sure to cover the type of ad you are wanting to push out there. Easy to use and great targeting options? Sign us up!

Advertising on X (Twitter)

Let’s take a look at Twitter Ads. Up until a couple of months ago, Twitter was a great platform for advertising. But, since Elon Musk has taken over and made major changes to the platform, there are now a number of barriers to entry before you can even start advertising.

To be able to run ads on Twitter you are required to be a Twitter Blue subscriber or to be a Verified Organisation. Both of these options require a monthly payment, but users don’t seem to think it is worth it, with less than 1% of users signing up for the subscription. The subscription doesn’t give you new options in the ads, it just allows you to advertise as you could prior to the implementation of the subscription services.

The platform itself is very similar to Meta’s Ads Manager, which makes it easier to pick up and get used to for new marketers. The targeting options are also similar, however, the focus on Twitter is usually through keywords and follower lookalikes.

The follower lookalike tool is useful as it allows you to choose other Twitter accounts whose followers you would like to target. This isn’t specifically their followers but people who are very similar to those following the account you have chosen.

Twitter also allows you to run ads for multiple metrics and can also be used by most advertisers. The potential reach is lower but 450 million users is still a lot and will include those who you are wanting to target.

From running many campaigns for our clients, as well as Prohibition, we have noticed that video view campaigns perform really well, and several of our campaigns have achieved a 50% view rate – which is beyond the industry standard for ad campaigns!

So… who wins the fight?

To be honest, there isn’t a set winner. Both platforms both offer similar attributes and have strong reasons to use both.

If you are looking for a platform that you can jump straight in and use, then Meta’s Ads Manager is the one for you as it isn’t behind a paid subscription.

If you are looking for a platform that is always guaranteed strong results, it sadly doesn’t exist, but as a social media marketer, you can make any campaign work if you do the correct testing and preparation.
