We can’t quite believe another year has almost been and gone – 2022 has gone by in the blink of an eye. We couldn’t end the year without our annual round-up of some of our favourite Christmas adverts, the perfect way to get us excited for the best time of year! Here we’ve taken a look at the festive videos that have warmed our hearts, put a smile on our face and been a big hit in the news and on social media.

Asda – Buddy the Elf visits store

This has to be our favourite one this year! Asda have very cleverly compiled footage of Buddy the Elf from the classic Christmas movie and have worked it into new footage, to appear as though Buddy has visited the store in the run up to Christmas. The advert shows Buddy get to grips with the checkouts, trying some festive samples and of course spreading Christmas cheer. The video has definitely been a hit in the media and on social media, with users praising its funniness and festiveness. But Asda haven’t stopped with just the video, they are also selling Elf themed products in store including wrapping paper, mugs and gifts for consumers – tying the campaign activity together nicely. Well done Asda, we’re big fans of this one!

John Lewis – The Beginning

Every year the John Lewis TV advert is highly anticipated and one we all look forward to – it practically signals the start of Christmas! This year, the ad follows the story of a man practising on a skateboard and trying to improve his skills in the run up to Christmas. It shows him progressively get better and eventually manage to do some tricks. At the end of the advert, it shows you a young girl arrive at the door holding a skateboard. She then notices the mans skateboard in the room and feels at ease and comforted. It then becomes clear that the couple are fostering the child and are meeting her for the first time. She loves skateboarding, so the man was practising for them to be able to bond. The ad highlights that John Lewis have made a long term commitment to support the futures of children in car. It’s incredibly moving, with a very important message (it certainly reduced us to tears!)

Aldi – Home Alone

Aldi are back again this year with another Kevin the Carrot advert. This one also pays tribute to a classic Christmas film, Home Alone! The video starts with Kevin’s family at the airport, but Kevin has been left at home on his own. When Kevin realises he’s on his own, his luck gets worse as an intruder appears to be trying to get into his home. He does his best to stand his ground by setting traps to keep the intruder away. Kevin has almost had enough when he goes to leave and is greeted by Santa – who it becomes apparent was not an intruder after all! Kevin’s family then finally arrive home and they get to enjoy a lovely Christmas dinner, where Aldi’s delicious products are laid out on a table. The ad then finishes with an important message from Aldi regarding their partnership with Neighbourly. Each year they donate thousands of meals to families in need – helping to spread joy and kindness during the festive season.

McDonalds – The List

McDonalds advert this year sees a young boy getting really excited about writing his Christmas list for Santa. As Christmas gets closer, the boys list grows longer and longer to the point that he is struggling to keep hold of it. The final part sees him go into town with his family when a gust of wind hits and his list is blown away! He tries to chase after it, but he can’t get it back. His family take him to McDonalds to cheer him up and they realise he has one part of his list left – a picture of him and his family. Highlighting that the best part about Christmas is spending time with our loved ones. It then ends with their classic slogan ‘are you reindeer ready?’. A very heart-warming advert.
