#MediaMonday – Ashley Flood

Today’s #MediaMonday features Ashley Flood, managing editor at KTAR News. She is the eyes and ears of the newsroom, working alongside reporters, editors and anchors to make sure KTAR listeners have the most accurate and important news stories throughout their day.

Ashley, time to share!

What is your story? How did you get into journalism?
I am a California native who grew up surrounded by the Coachella Valley mountains. I ventured to Flagstaff and graduated from Northern Arizona University with a double major in journalism and strategic communication with an emphasis in advertising. Growing up, I spent my mornings glued to the TV watching the news while I got ready for school, but I never considered it as a career until my senior year of college. That year, I began working as a producer, anchor and reporter for NAZ Today, Northern Arizona’s only news station. I fell in love with reporting on stories, coming up with ideas, and anchoring the evening show. After I graduated, I moved to Phoenix and started working at KTAR as a news editor, eventually the evening anchor, and now the managing editor.

So, what is it like working at KTAR?
You’ll never be bored if you work in the news, you can quote me on that. My job is different every single day thanks to the ever changing news cycle, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I plan out our stories for the day and the following morning, work with reporters to develop angles, and assign reporters during breaking news situations. I handle our daybook, set up interviews, turn stories, run the intern program and edit every story before it hits the air. It can be challenging at times, but it is so rewarding! My favorite season is election season, it’s such a busy time for us as a news organization but it’s incredibly exciting with the entire newsroom working together.

What do you like to do outside of work?
When I’m not in the newsroom I’m usually at my crossfit gym, or hiking some of my favorite trails around the valley. I’m also a big hockey fan and love cheering on the Anaheim Ducks and Arizona Coyotes.
