Open source training scheme aims to support entry level agency talent

3Thinkrs is looking to cooperate with other digital, marketing and public relations agencies to solve the entry level onboarding and training challenge created by COVID-19.

Yesterday I wrote about the issues faces employers in recruiting junior and mid-level talent in public relations. Today it’s the turn of entry level recruitment.

The entry level market ground to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic. Successive lockdowns meant organisations struggled to recruit and onboard staff.

Line management, mentoring, training and tacit learning are all difficult to adapt from the physical to virtual sphere.

There’s an additional dynamic in the public relations market that even the most junior entry level role seemingly demand work experience.

Ruth Jones, managing director and founder, 3Thinkrs believes she has a disruptive approach. She’s looking to build an open source entry level training scheme for the agency environment.

Ruth has mapped out the components of an entry level training programme across five areas of capability.

  1. Strategy, integrated tactics, and sales

  2. News discipline, including scanning and newsjacking

  3. Design, content and creative

  4. Media and measurement

  5. Mindset and performance.

Ruth is looking for agency leaders to step up to help develop the syllabus, support as trainers, and sign-up entry level staff to the programme.

The initial programme will run weekly, starting in October with virtual training and homework. In time, it could be developed for the in-house environment.

There are issues of cooperation and competition to be worked out, but I believe that this type of intervention could help address the hiatus that we’ve seen in the entry level public relations market in the last 18 months.
