Community is key at Queensland-based youth radio station, Radio Metro. With a strong focus on connecting younger audiences, the station has been making waves on the Gold Coast since it was founded in 2001.

The station targets the 15-35 demographic with a particular focus on those aged between 18 and 24. In line with this demographic, they regularly play club tracks, dance music, DJ sets, RnB and hip hop. “We feature music that is youth orientated with some leftfield/underground shows,” says Station Manager Vikki Martin-Smith. A vital part of maintaining the youthful nature of music and programming is the station's Music Meeting Committee, made up of local DJs who play at local clubs and festivals. Vikki also keeps track of new music by visiting dance music conferences such as Amsterdam Dance Event & Electric Music Conference. With many years experience in the radio and programming industry and as a DJ/Producer, Vikki says she “loves researching national and international charts such as the Aria Club Charts, Billboard and Beatport charts as well as looking at new playlists from our international DJs for their show on Radio Metro for brand new music ideas.”

Keeping things local has always been a focus for the station, giving the city’s eager and dedicated individuals an opportunity to share their talents with their community. The station supports local presenters, DJs and Producers. “We love supporting our local young artists and play a 'local' music track every hour from 9am-3pm, as well as a local focus on Mondays in Bilsy's Neighbourhood Show from 6-8pm,” says Vikki.

Radio Metro also has a strong focus on giving back to the community. The station has held events such as a “White Party” at Q1 and “KomUnity pool parties” in Coolangatta. “We have previously held charity events to raise money and awareness for charities such as Livin, Animal Welfare League, Gold Coast Project for Homeless Youth and Walk With Us,” says Vikki. Radio Metro also helps support local and national charities with free daily community announcements that extends essential messaging to a broader audience.

Radio Metro broadcasts on 105.7 FM from the Gold Coast.
