Pew Research Center analyzed Americans’ digital literacy and comprehension of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and big technology companies.

A survey of 5,101 U.S. adults was conducted from May 15-21, 2023.

Key findings include:

1.) 48% of respondents correctly identified an example of two-factor authentication from a set of images.
2.) Only 32% of respondents knew large language models, such as Chat GPT, created responses based on previously learned word patterns and relationships from text pulled from the Internet.
— 42% knew a deepfake is a seemingly real image, video or audio of something that didn’t occur in reality.
3.) 24% of respondents did not know the U.S. has no national privacy law addressing how companies can use the data they collect.
— 21% knew websites in the U.S. are prohibited from collecting personal data from minors under 13.
