Meet the Media: Doug Bolduc, Managing Editor at Automotive News Europe

What’s the top story you’re working on right now?

My main job is to look after all of Automotive News Europe’s monthly digital products, so at any time I’m working one to two months ahead. Some items we are building into stories involve Phantom Braking as well as what will be the second-life future for EV batteries.

Tell us about your dream assignment.

Road testing a Ferrari in Hawaii (Oahu, Maui or the Big Island, please!).

Describe the craziest or most fun story you’ve written.

The craziest was revealing the bad behaviors of high-ranking government officials in 1992 while on the island of Saipan and in 1999 while working in Venice, Florida. Both stories led to criminal charges against the officials and their resignations. The most fun was a series called Touched by Cancer, which highlighted the inspiring stories of survivors of the disease as a run-up to the Walk-For-Life fundraising event in our town. It won an award from the National Newspaper Association for community service.

What is your top pet peeve with PR people?

Answering a question for a CEO. It is insulting to me and to the CEO.

What is the top trend you’re covering or interested in right now?

The move to electric and autonomous cars, which is fascinating on so many levels.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, interests, favorites, background, etc.)

My wife and I have been together since 1991. We are both in the media and we were once the weekend TV news and sports anchor team on the island of Guam. We have lived a combined 22 years in southern Germany, where we currently have two dogs (rescue Salukis, one from Oman and one from Abu Dhabi). We love taking “the girls” on adventures in our area, which is full of forests, lakes and other great places to explore. I started writing professionally at 17 years old as a sports correspondent for my local newspaper, the Milford (NH) Cabinet. That was followed by four years as a TV sports reporter and anchor before a return to the newspaper business. I’ve been with Automotive News Europe since 2003. I am a big fan of the Boston Bruins and Red Sox.

Finish this sentence: People would be surprised to know that I know the words in German to a key portion of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
