Amid Brexit (yes, it’s back), Twitter chaos and TikTok’s algorithm changes – there’s lots to keep up on in the world of social media – take a look at our round-up of updates below!

Instagram’s live shop closes

Instagram have recently removed the ability to tag products during live broadcasts.

Meta says this change will allow the platform to ‘focus on products and features that provide the most value to our users’ as the platform continually strives to improve recommendations to users.

Instagram also recently removed the Shop tab however, as far as we know, Instagram shopping isn’t completely disappearing yet! Product tags are still very much an element.

Meta’s Brexit update

This week, Meta announced that it is changing its WhatsApp T&C’s due to Brexit, and are changing to its US service provider from its Irish subsidiary.

This is all based around different data protection and privacy laws which change after leaving the EU – changes should come into effect at the end of April. Terms of service will be changed across all Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp).

Twitter rival emerges

Meta are currently exploring plans to create a ‘text-based’ platform to potentially rival Twitter. Meta said: “We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”

Twitter has been struggling with the whiplash-causing constant changes implemented by Elon Musk, as the new leader attempts to streamline and cost-cut to save the platform (from a revenue stream perspective). A rival app could capitalise on this chaos and, if done correctly, divert users to yet another Meta-owned platform.

TikTok refresh button

TikTok have officially launched its refresh button for the ‘For You’ feed amid increasing threats of bans on the app.

At the touch of a button, users can now reset their feed and only see recommendations generated from that point forward (as if they were new to the app once again). Users can find this feature within Settings & Privacy on the app.

This comes as just one of a range of updates to reduce any repetitiveness and toxicity on the app – such as updates allowing users to hide certain keywords and phrases, and also a ‘not interested’ button to stop certain recommendations.
