It’s our final social media updates round-up of 2022, so let’s see what the main platforms have been working on amid Musk’s Twitter Blue whiplash and ongoing Instagram changes and updates.

Here’s our round-up of all the latest social media marketing updates you need to know!

Instagram increase creator transparency

Instagram updates continue to surprise influencers and social media managers, with the platform now aiming to increase the transparency with creators. The Account Status dashboard will let users know whether their content will be eligible for recommended/sponsored activity, followed by next steps to rectify any issues.

This will be great to quickly identify whether your posts violate any of the Instagram rules or privacy concerns with a yellow alert in the dashboard – a good move from Instagram in our eyes.

Facebook threatens to pull news

After the US congress were presented with the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, Meta is threatening to remove news from the platform entirely if the legislation passes into law.

If passed, the legislation would give greater power to publishers over their content, potentially negotiating with platforms for higher fees if they wished to share the content. Meta’s threat to remove the news element wouldn’t be the first time; in Australia in 2021 Facebook blocked the sharing of news, government communications and commercial pages in a similar incident. We’re intrigued to see how this one develops…

Twitter blue re-launches

Twitter Blue has relaunched after last month’s rollercoaster with a slight twist – users signing up on a mobile iOS device will have to pay $11 a month for the premium subscription while web users will pay the previous $8 a month for blue tick luxury.

The likely reasoning is based on Twitter tax and revenue, but Twitter have alluded to some potential extra benefits of the subscription such as potentially being served half the amount of ads, and possibly being able to share longer videos.

TikTok dominates news

Google have reported that just under half of young people are turning to TikTok or Instagram to search for places to eat or shop (for example) as opposed to typical search engines such as Google Maps or Google Search.

This solidifies that TikTok is becoming a source of news and information for younger audiences, rather than traditional search engines or news outlets/news apps. This should be a consideration for integrated PR/social media campaigns as the lines begin to blur between news and entertainment apps.

BeReal gains competitor traction

We knew it would only be a matter of time! BeReal have caught Instagram’s eye and the platform is now testing two similar features ‘Roll Call’ and ‘Glimpse Stories’.

Both features follow the authentic approach of BeReal in offering users opportunities to share what is happening now – real, raw and unfiltered. The launch of TikTiok Now saw TikTok implementing its own version of BeReal (despite their defence that it is not a copycat). TikTok Now gives users a 3-minute window to share their post and has additional sharing options (for those over 18) so you can see what is happening in the world around you. It seems that more authentic and ‘real’ content is really going to be key in 2023.

LinkedIn release 2023 best practices

LinkedIn expert Richard van der Blom recently published his final LinkedIn algorithm report of the year which gives some great insight into how to maximise your businesses LinkedIn performance, with some great strategy recommendations for 2023.

The key stand outs for us were:

  • Recommended 5x posts a week
  • Best pillars include personal stories, employer branding, social responsibility and thought leadership
  • Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are best days to post

These are of course generalised, and your page strategy may differ slightly, but this is a great baseline to begin with for trial and improvement next year.
