Why you should take time to disconnect from technology

By Jacob McKimm

Breaks from tech can help you recharge and focus on your work.

Connecting to your team and company 24/7 with technology like smartphones means you can easily reach someone and have people reach you, but it also means you can’t disconnect yourself from work, which can lead to issues like decreased creativity.

There is a way to solve this. Smartphones and computers are tools we willingly associate with, so we can put them down at any time, as well. This means you can, and should, occasionally disconnect from technology to help recharge your brain and help you relax.

Why disconnecting is a great idea

Disconnecting from technology is a fantastic way to recharge. Focusing on yourself instead of the technology surrounding you will help you refocus on what you’re doing and give you new ideas. Some personal time that lets you breathe, focus, and enjoy the world outside of computers can be just what you need to see work-related projects in a new light.

Some people might panic at the idea of getting away from their smartphones and computers for even a few minutes. If you’re one of those people, look at it this way: People and companies survived without having direct access to people via smartphones at all times. Have faith that your co-workers and team can do their job well without you being glued to your phone or computer.

How to disconnect from technology

You can unplug from technology and computers in several ways. Some examples include:

  • Taking a walk
  • Riding your bike
  • Driving around your neighborhood.
  • Playing with your kids or grandkids
  • Having lunch outside and leaving technology inside
  • Creating an area in your yard where you can relax and enjoy the day without any technology bothering you, such as setting up a chair under the shade
  • Taking a vacation where you put away your smartphone and computer

The amount of time you get away isn’t important; what’s important is you feel you’re separate from technology long enough that you’re relaxed and recharged.

Don’t let technology rule your life

Occasionally pulling the plug on technology can help you focus and recharge your mental batteries. This might concern some people because of how much they focus on technology in their lives, but it’s very possible to disconnect and enjoy life as-is. Even a simple walk in the neighborhood or a few minutes outside without your smartphone can make you feel refreshed. Give it a try, no matter how attached to a smartphone or computer you are.
