Muck Rack analyzed the state of journalism in 2023.

A survey of 2,226 journalists based in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and Europe was conducted from Jan. 4 – Feb. 6, 2023.

Key findings include:

— Journalists’ top concerns were disinformation (50%), lack of funding (50%), trust in journalism/media (40%), and lack of time to cover stories thoughtfully (33%).

— 66% of journalists said they track how many times their stories are shared on social media.

— This number has grown about 4% since 2021.

— 50% of journalists said they have considered leaving Twitter in the past year, despite the fact that Twitter was the most “valuable” social network (78%).

— 92% of respondents said they prefer to be pitched via 1:1 email.

— 76% said they are more likely to cover a story if offered an exclusive.
— 45% said one follow up is ideal and 51% said this follow up should come within 3-7 days after the pitch.
