#MediaMonday – Zahid Arab

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from one of the best-dressed staffers at Arizona’s Family (both for CBS 5 and KTVK TV 3), Zahid Arab.
Wait a minute! Zahid, weren’t you just working in the community relations department a few months ago? And now you are doing what? Tell us about your journey at the station?
Long-time reader first time caller here. I was reporting for Arizona’s Family in 2016 then transitioned to community relations and now part of our morning team as managing editor. I help coordinate story coverage, booking segments and special projects with our morning team. The Starbucks employees and I are on a first-name basis…. but they know me as my “Starbucks name” Quincy shhhh. I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn about different parts of the station.
Now, let’s back it up. How did you get into broadcast journalism? What’s your story?
My parents always wanted me to be a doctor, so I was a physiology major for about a year until one day I realized I wasn’t a huge fan of math and science. Remember those awards in high school? Most likely to succeed, best athlete, etc?  Well….I was most likely to host a talk show. I transferred to the Cronkite School at ASU and graduated in 2005. Since then, I’ve worked for stations in Sioux City, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Seattle and Dallas.
Tell us about what we can expect from both stations in 2019?
Our focus is telling “people stories” and improving the lives of those around us. I think what separates us from others in town is that we have two distinct brands that appeal to different people.
Where did you grow up?
Born in California, grew up in south Tempe. A product of the Kyrene School District and 2000 graduate of Corona Del Sol High School.
Favorite type of music?
Pop etc in the morning, Country on the way home.
Favorite color?
Fluorescent beige.  Blue a close second.
Favorite places to visit?
Anywhere with a friend and cold drink.
What are some of your favorite local spots or things to do?
I love catching local theatre/performing arts productions.
Favorite foods or restaurants?
I love El Bravo, Red Thai and Joyride happy hour.
Least favorite food?
Not a huge seafood fan
Three things readers would be surprised to know about you?

  • I have a secret crush on Taco Bell but don’t like to tell people for fear of being judged.
  • I like country music.
  • I don’t like to touch dry sponges, they make me feel weird.

What should people be pitching you?
For 3TV, pitch me something new and interesting that we haven’t seen on other stations. If it’s timely/has a news peg even better. We’ll want a real person that we can center the story on. If you just have an expert, we can consider that for in-studio guests, but we’ll ask you for ways to make it visual/creative.
What is the lead time you need for content?
It really depends. If you have everything in #12 ready to go for us it may be quicker than you think!
What is the best way to reach you?
Email (Zahid.Arab@azfamily.com) or by cell (480-229-3567).
