Check the Calendar… Part II

Scott wrote about the importance of checking the calendar before scheduling an event or announcement to ensure you are not in conflict with some other major event on a particular day.

To that I will add, check the calendar for religious holidays as well so as to do your best not to schedule even the quickest of meetings on one of those days.

I’ve written about this in the past, particularly as it relates to the Jewish holidays. By the way, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 25 and lasts through sundown Tuesday, Sept. 27.  Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Tuesday, Oct. 4 and lasts until Wednesday night, Oct. 5.

During these days, please be thoughtful of those who observe them by not scheduling meetings, conference calls or deadlines. For teachers and administration, please do not schedule tests, presentations or other mandatory activities. I remember my middle school yearbook had all the kids who missed picture day listed in the back of the book.

For those that observe, take the time to educate your friends and colleagues about the significance of these holidays — the more we understand the more likely it is we’ll be mindful of these days in the years to come.
