Who Can Be a Solo PR Pro Now?

May 8, 2018 | Getting Started

Ten years ago, we asked “Who Can Be a Solo PR Pro?”  At that time, we noted that while this site has “PR” in the name,  professionals in a wide range of disciplines share common issues and challenges, and all could learn from the insights and success strategies we share.

As a solo, you can chart your own course and craft a practice that includes diverse areas of expertise. In 2008, we shared that Solo PR Pros can be involved in:

  • Business consulting
  • Branding
  • Community relations
  • Corporate communications
  • Direct advertising
  • Event planning
  • Fundraising
  • Government relations
  • Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC)
  • Internal communications
  • Internet marketing
  • Investor relations
  • Journalism
  • Market research
  • Marketing
  • Media buying
  • Media relations
  • Non-profit management
  • Product management
  • Promotions
  • Public affairs
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Social media consulting
  • Training
  • Web design and management
  • Writing and editing

What has changed? Solos continue to expand their service offerings based on their unique skills and areas of interest. Today, we have an even broader definition of “Solo PR Pro.” A solo may work alone, have an assistant or other specialized help or be “solo plus” with employees or strategic partners. Solo PR Pros work with SMBs and Fortune 100 companies. Some have local practices and others are international. Many have a side gig or passion that may or may not be related to communications.

We have changed too, expanding from a blog to a popular twitter chat to an international membership organization.

What has remained the same is the camaraderie and support of the Solo PR Pro community. Each day, we see solos helping other solos. With professionals distributed across the globe, there is a always a solo in the virtual office next door to help solve a problem, offer a helping hand or provide a safe place to let out a primal scream. Our mission at Solo PR Pro has also not changed. We are committed to helping solo and solo plus pros have the business they desire on their own terms. Whatever type of solo you are, you don't have to do it alone; this blog and community is here to offer support and resources.

What kind of a Solo PR Pro are you? Tell us about it in the comments or on social media using #solopr.
