There’s a new textbook in town for public relations, and it’s bringing forth a whole new marketing strategy along with it!

Having a book is just one part of the puzzle when it comes to having a textbook. It’s much more than that – it’s really an integrated mix of various strategies, approaches, and tactics that are utilized all together for a campaign, like in public relations. So, what better way to practice what you preach than applying the ideas and skills in the book to the campaign promoting the book?

For Discovering PR, which will be coming out in August. I wanted to do something new – different perhaps – for this book. I wanted to do something that could really show the ROI of the impact and could be utilized across different channels?

So? What is this new approach? A video that is professionally produced and created by the best of the best.

I am really excited to share with everyone my new book reveal movie. How did this all come about?

Well, my motto is simple when it comes to my books. As an author, you have to essentially walk the walk when it comes to the ideas you are proposing here.

My good friend Joey Wagner has a video production company called Silent Wolf Productions, and for the longest time, I have been a fan of their work. They have worked with some of the biggest events and brands in Louisville, and I was thinking one day – hmmm – I wonder if they would ever consider doing a project with a professor? Perhaps for a book launch?

The lightbulb went up, and the rest is history!

I reached out to Kyle Irvin, who is the Creative Director for Silent Wolf Productions, and we had several conversations on the overall feel, look, and purpose of the video. We met up on campus (safely of course with COVID19, and were able to spend a few hours getting footage for the one minute video.

Kyle and Jared were absolutely fantastic and very professional – they were able to give me their feedback on some of the points and directions that really made the final product in my opinion pretty amazing! I was extremely impressed with how we were able to come together with a strong approach and perspective of what we wanted to accomplish for the book.

So, what all is involved in new marketing approaches for my textbook? Here are some elements we are launching here:

Book swag. Everyone loves swag, including me! However, I wanted to make sure the swag that was used here really reflected my brand. Everyone knows I love coffee, and what better product is there than a coffee tumbler? I was able to get some made with the book cover, and of course it is the perfect normal size (okay, it’s 20+ ounces, so that’s normal!), but it’s a nice gift to give everyone for the book. In the main video, you can see the tumbler on my office desk.

Webinars. We had a great webinar with SAGE that covered the aspects of the top 10 skills that are needed for PR students today, and it tied in really nicely to what we are currently seeing happening in the workplace. Another element that is important for the book is to build a community, which we have with our Facebook group. This is a place where professors and students can come and ask questions, participate in guest talks with some of the featured professionals in the book, and more. We are now well over 100 members, which is very exciting!

Animation text video. Silent Wolf Productions was able to create a great short clip from the video I did that talked about the marketable skills that are embedded within the book as a whole. I love this because this is easily shareable on social media, and can be embedded in other channels.
