Critics say Bank of America’s ‘Je Suis Bullish’ email was in poor taste

The bank sent out a research note with a title playing on the ‘Je Suis Charlie’ slogan that has emerged since the shootings at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

A Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst’s decision to title an email with a play on the “Je Suis Charlie” slogan may have come, as comedians often say, too soon.

The bank’s Friday morning Flow Show email was titled “Je Suis Bullish,” likely in an effort to inject current events into a document about commodity prices and bond funds. The “Je Suis Charlie” (“I Am Charlie”) slogan started to rally support for victims after the Jan. 7 shooting that killed 12 people at the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

In a Business Insider item about the email, correspondent Mike Bird wrote, “The note wasn’t about France. It’s not even pithy. It just comes off in poor taste.” Andrew Clark, deputy business editor at The Times of London, likewise said the note was “in very dubious taste.”
