2023 has started with a series of updates across most social media platforms. One we’ve been eagerly awaiting is Instagram allowing native reel scheduling, finally! Take a look at our latest social media updates round-up below to keep you up to date.

Instagram launches native reel scheduling and new notes feature

Instagram’s much anticipated native scheduling has finally been rolled out, allowing users with professional accounts to schedule posts and reels up to 75 days in advance! This is a game changer for social media managers and creators alike, as prior to this update reels were unable to be scheduled in advance and third-party tools were required for regular post scheduling. In its infancy, the tool can be quite glitchy – so it’s best to ensure that reels are scheduled properly rather than posted immediately as problems with this have been reported, so one to keep an eye on.

Instagram have also introduced the ‘Notes’ feature across Europe – the feature allows you to send short 60-character messages to your followers who you also follow back, or a close friends list. Similar to stories, the message will be visible for 24 hours at the top of the direct messages tab, before it disappears. For creators and businesses, there is potential for this to be used to share updates and announcements as they are happening, without the same commitment that a feed post would require.

Meta expands on advertising rules

Under new advertising rules introduced by Meta, advertisers on Instagram and Facebook will be limited in their ability to use personalised data to advertise to under 18’s. This means they won’t be able to leverage as much personalised data to target ads to teens, such as targeting based on gender and in-app activity.

Twitter introduces two feeds

Twitter has diversified its feed to create both a ‘For you’ and a ‘Following’ feed, with the former being the default showing recommendations to users rather than the classic following feed.

This change moves the platform closer to the TikTok-style, feed although it does allow users to easily swipe between feeds back to the usual following (plus sprinkles of suggested content). This has been met with a mixed response, with some backlash over defaulting to recommendations when the platform previously has focused on the following feed.

Twitter is also testing a quick boost option which provides a quick and easy way to promote your tweet without having to launch a full ad campaign – one to trial for Twitter advertisers!

TikTok updates its content rules

TikTok is updating its content rules to protect users from potential harmful content around eating disorders and also the LGBTQ+ community. This has come about after the channel recently came under fire due to its content moderation, fuelling this community guidelines update.

TikTok are also testing a feature to ‘refresh’ the ‘For You’ Page. With the new refresh button users will be able to generate a new set of suggested content which is ‘not based on previous activity or interactions’. Effectively, after hitting the button, data gathering will start afresh to being compiling new content suggestions.

Popular food brand joins BeReal

Amid their continuing TikTok success, Chipotle has recently jumped onto BeReal as another platform to leverage connecting with Gen Z. Chipotle launched a promotion in October 2022 that offered opportunities to win a free burrito if fans posted their BeReal photo in a Halloween costume inside one of its stores.

The future of BeReal is uncertain as the app quickly rose in popularity, but it’s too early to tell whether this will continue or fade away as many new social media apps have in the past – any changes or updates the platform makes over the next few months will ultimately decide whether they maintain their momentum into 2023.
