#WhatisWednesday – How to Get the Most Out of Your Media Coverage

Your byline was secured in a local paper. Hooray! So how are you going to use this earned media to your advantage?

Getting published in the media can be very exciting and may even yield a new prospect or two. But that’s where the fun stops, if you let it.

Your piece was newsworthy enough to be shared in the news, so you clearly have something important to say. Why not share your story in all the ways possible?

Here are a few ways you can get the most out of your media coverage:

Continue pitching the story

Just because you’ve secured coverage in one outlet doesn’t mean you have to stop there! Continue pitching other relevant media outlets. You can get creative and reach out to other types of media including blogs and e-newsletters. You might find some new websites to secure a placement during your research.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant or a healthcare office that is covered in plaques of newspaper clippings and framed magazine covers? Sharing your media wins on social media is another form of showing the successes of your business. It tells your consumers that you are recognized as a thought-leader in your industry.

Send internally and externally

I once worked for a large global company that received a lot of mentions in the media. Every month, we would get an email that included all the instances our company was mentioned from episodes of The Simpsons to opinion pieces from our competitors. Sharing the good news internally helps employees feel more connected and involved with the business. You can also share this externally to potential and/or existing consumers through your newsletter or email.

Repurpose the content

If you have something important to say, why not share it in all the ways you can? Repurpose the article into a blog post for your website. Use quotes from the piece to share as captions on social media. Create an infographic that streamlines your thoughts into one photo for your brochures and newsletters.
