What motivates people to use social media?

Picture this: A room full of people and most of them are looking down at their phones.  It is a classic picture for 2019, so it is no surprise that 45% of the world’s population uses social media, according to Famemass.

On average, people are using social media almost an hour more now than they did five years ago.  But there are still only 24 hours in a day, so why are people spending more time on social media now than ever before?

Could it be that people are spending more time sharing their thoughts when Facebook asks them, ‘what is on your mind?’ Not very likely.

It is because the motivations for using social media have changed over the years.  Instagram, Twitter and Facebook were once used to stay in touch with what friends and family are doing, but the top reason people use social media today is to stay up to date with current events and news.

People now spend an average of two hours and 23 minutes on social media every day.

Facebook continues to be the platform people spend the most time on with a whopping 58 minutes followed by Instagram at 53 minutes, YouTube at 40 minutes, Snapchat at 35 minutes and Twitter coming in last at only three minutes.

Why do you think people aren’t spending as much time on Twitter?
