Following market trends: New Reddit feature puts videos in front of wider audiences

by | Sep 8, 2021 | Public Relations

When users of the Reddit app recently opened the platform, they could notice a new button next to their search bar. This button is a brand new feature that the company introduced for its users, which allows them to see a video feed that pools various content from subreddits being followed, as well as content from subreddits not being followed.

The new feature comes at a time when a number of different platforms are trying to follow the example set by TikTok, the video-sharing platform where users can record, edit, and post their own videos in a perpetual feed. Similar to TikTok, Reddit also introduced a new feed of vertical videos featuring content that is shared on the platform. Aside from seeing the videos, users could also interact with them by commenting on them and upvoting, downvoting, and giving the content awards that are available on the platform.

Although the platform hasn’t announced how it’s able to pull video content from subreddits that users don’t follow, it’s no surprise that the platform is pushing video content in this new era. Other social media platforms and apps, such as Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube, have also introduced their own video sharing features in attempts to compete with the current most popular video sharing platform.

Aside from those platforms, in an attempt to follow popular market trends, Instagram was the first platform to introduce a Stories feature, which mimicked one of the main features of Snapchat. After the success of Instagram Stories, both Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as Twitter, later on, all announced similar photo and video sharing features, where users could have their content stay up for 24 hours for other people to see before it gets removed.

However, Twitter had been the most unsuccessful in this endeavor, as several months after it introduced the new feature, it was promptly removed. This is because, according to the company, Twitters users weren’t interested in that feature and it didn’t get the desired support. On the other hand, Facebook and LinkedIn still have their stories feature, which although aren’t as popular as Instagram’s stories, they haven’t been removed thus far.
