#MediaMonday – Dan Spindle

Dan SpindleI met ABC 15 morning and mid-day news anchor Dan Spindle a few weeks ago.  If you get up early enough, you can catch him anchoring ABC 15 Mornings from 4:30 – 7 a.m. and again at 11 a.m.   We both share a passion for Arizona sports and the civic pride that is evident in our state’s small towns.  He’s been nominated for Emmy awards and has been honored by the Associated Press for his anchoring.
Dan, time to share:
Growing up, our family moved to every corner of this country and I also lived in South America, but have always felt at home in the desert.  I am probably one of the very few journalists you’ll meet who has graduated from Willcox High School in southern Arizona.
I first caught the television bug at the Film School at Scottsdale Community College where I earned a degree in Motion Picture and Television Production. I then attended the University of Arizona and earned a B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from New York Institute of Technology.
My first gig in television took me to the Pacific Northwest where I served as Weekend Anchor for KOBI-TV in Medford, Ore. From there I worked at the ABC affiliate in Tucson, KGUN9, in the same role. I returned to the Valley when I landed a job at KSAZ-TV where I was a reporter and weekend anchor.  Getting back to the Valley also allowed me to returned to teach my fellow “Artichokes” at the SCC film school in courses on Radio and Television Fundamentals.
I joined the ABC15 News team in March of 2013 and love telling stories and showcasing the great state of Arizona.
I’ve covered every kind of story from family farms to wildfires and floods; from crime trends to political campaigns. I interviewed Ron Paul and Mitt Romney as they vied for a Presidential nomination and I covered Gabrielle Giffords’ budding political career in southern Arizona. Stories about the people across our state make the biggest impression on me every day, from the brave men and women battling diseases to the cryptozoologists searching for Bigfoot in the Four Peaks wilderness. I love the storytelling and the daily excitement that comes from working in television news.
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my wife, Kendra, and our five children. I’m also into Star Wars, history, video editing and as mentioned earlier — a die-hard fan of all Arizona sports teams.
