#TipForTuesday – How to pitch during a pandemic

As COVID-19 continues to dominate much of the news cycle, how should PR pros alter their approach to pitching the media?
As both a PR expert and freelance writer, Alison had previously written extensive tips on pitching the media. PR Daily suggests reevaluating your media lists and researching how reporters have shifted gears to talk about the virus.

In addition to those tips on how to pitch during a pandemic, I would add:

Switching up your contact strategy

Sadly, we are seeing more and more reporters being furloughed or to move to a new beat. Do your homework to find another contact at the media outlet that may be covering that beat. You may also get an out-of-office response that provides new contact information. Be sure to keep a running of list of these changes.  It is possible that the journalist will return to that beat. Be sure to pitch that new contact and follow-up when appropriate.

See how you can help
Continue building your relationships with the media; it just as important now to know what type of content they are seeking and see if you can help to fill it.

Don’t be afraid of the phone
We’ve become so reliant on email and text messaging, but sometimes a phone call might be just what it takes to put your pitch over the edge.  Pay attention to news deadline and consider making a quick call to follow-up.
How have you changed your approach to pitching during COVID-19?
