I had a conversation with a nonprofit that has been getting repeated questions from the investigative team of a local media outlet about their operations. They’re not exactly sure why. They’ve been pretty transparent about all the things that are going on there and in good shape. Yet the questions keep coming. So this nonprofit offered the opportunity for the media outlet to interview them at their location, see their operations, provide unfettered access. The media outlet said no.

Can anyone give me a reason why they wouldn’t take them up on that?

For organizations, if you think that the questions are certainly something that you want to address, and you have nothing to hide, offer the interview on your home turf. Have them see your operations, let them have access to not only the top management team but also people on the floor. Give them the opportunity to see things up front, because that’s the way they’re going to get the full story.
