3 golden rules of PR ethics in 2018

By Yulia Dianova

How to be an ethical public relations professional

Keep these PR ethics rules in mind as you head into 2018.

Some people think of public relations professionals as manipulators of public perceptions. Sadly, some individuals view PR strategies as tools to trick people into doing something. PR professionals are often accused of distorting reality and spreading propaganda. How do you avoid ethical accusations in your PR practice? Here are three rules to remember to remain ethical as a PR practitioner.

1. Be honest.

Trust is essential for your company’s reputation and growth. Lying, misleading and distorting are all acts of dishonesty. Honest business practices inspire your key publics to treat your company and mission with respect. Honest PR practices build foundations of trust with all key stakeholders, like the media, your employees, customers, investors and every other individual integral to your company’s success.

2. Respect confidentiality.

Confidentiality is one of the fundamental ethical principles in public relations. Never compromise your client’s privacy.

  • Protect the confidentiality of your present and former clients and employees.
  • Never use confidential information to the disadvantage of your clients.
  • Never disclose any confidential information unless you receive specific permission or in cases where the law requires it.

3. Be competent.

You should have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality professional PR services. This includes a continuing commitment to professional improvement.

The media and the public are constantly challenging ethics in public relations. It’s important for a PR professional to maintain the highest possible ethical standards while serving clients.
