Comms School: end of term

Comms School is back for one last time tomorrow Tuesday 21, May. Please join us at 630pm, BST.

In 2010 Antony Mayfield wrote a book called Me and My Web Shadow: How to Manage Your Reputation Online.

Mayfield challenged readers to manage the content that is served when people search for your name online. He showed how content about you on the internet can affect your job, your business and your personal life.

Ten years later I’d urge everyone to have a personal plan for managing their online reputation. Google, LinkedIn and Twitter are routinely used by recruitment and HR teams to verify an individual’s career history and expertise.

It’s an approach that has clearly worked for Mayfield. He’s subsequently gone on to found and lead Brilliant Noise, a marketing agency that works for brands including adidas, Diageo, EDF Energy, Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Communications and Universal Pictures.

A proactive approach to personal reputation is important when you’re starting out to find a job but it also helps develop your career. My blog and participation in social media communities help attract talent and work.

Marcel Klebba and I created Comms School to help students get to grips with their web shadow or digital footprint. We’ve hosted six webinars over a period of 12-weeks and created a lively Facebook community.

The Comms School sessions have covered topics ranging from building a blog to developing relationships. There’s been homework along the way.

  1. The importance of owning your own corner of the internet

  2. How to develop your own personal brand online

  3. Building your own blog

  4. Listening, building relationships and participating in communities

  5. Sources of inspiration for creating content

Marcel has written about what he’s learnt from Comms School and the community.

“It’s been incredible to see people getting involved. We’ve had some great people around; anyone from Jessica Pardoe and India Barker to Nicola Brown and Keith Lewis, and many more,” he said.

You can access replays of all the Comms School webinars via the Facebook group and we’re back live for one last time tomorrow before we breakup until September. We’ll be sharing highlights from the sessions and what we’ve learnt along the way. I hope you can join us.
