#MediaMonday – Merichelle Norwood

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Merichelle Norwood of both She Forks PHX and New Times Food and Drink.
So, Mer, time to share!
Tell us how you got your start in writing? Tell us your story! I’ve always been a writer. In college, I was editor-in-chief of the alternative newspaper and interned at VIBE Magazine. I began my career in marketing but still found ways to cultivate my love of writing. I got into the food scene by exploring new places and writing food reviews. Eventually, I was sitting on a gold mine of content. I finally launched my own blog, She Forks PHX.
And how did you make your way to She Forks PHX? My husband had a huge influence on me. He’s been cooking for almost 20 years, so first and foremost, he taught me to have a palate. As I kept exploring new places in the Valley, I wanted a space to channel both my interests in photography and writing. I also had a vision to be a leader in the food community, by bringing people together. I started She Forks PHX in 2017 and haven’t looked back!
And to Phoenix New Times? I started to have an ear to the food scene in the Valley and started to see trends pop up. I connected with the Food Editor of The Phoenix New Times and pitched a few ideas. She loved them, and the rest is history!
Where did you grow up? On the East Coast, in Jersey City, N.J. I moved to Phoenix when I met my husband a few years ago, and immediately fell in love with Phoenix.
Favorite type of music? All kinds! But I have a soft spot for ‘90s hip hop.
Favorite color? Pink!
Favorite local restaurants or other haunts? That’s a tough one! I love coffee shops and hang out spots, and a few of my favorites are Sip Coffee + Beer Garage, Ruze Cake House, Changing Hands, and The Henry.
Least favorite food? Salads. As Ron Swanson would put it, “Would you like some salad?” “Since I am not a rabbit, no I do not.”
Three things readers would be surprised to know about you? I used to play collegiate rugby, I’ve lived in three other major cities (Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City), and I’m allergic to kiwis.
What is the lead time you need for content? A few weeks.
What should (and shouldn’t) people be pitching to you? Anything and everything food-related in the Valley!
What is the best way to reach you? Email me at hello@sheforksphx.com and I’ll get back to you asap!
