PR Job Coach

'If your heartstrings are resonant with the folks mentioned in this New York Times article Lost in Recession, Toll on Underemployed and Underpaid you no doubt understand the challenges inherent in job search. Landing your next gig in your own field is tough enough but changing careers or fields is not for the faint of heart or mind. That said it is possible to change horses mid-stream but it is going to require diligence, patience and endurance.

Reviving the Customer Experience – One Food Truck at a Time: Part 1

Waxing UnLyrical

What do you get when you combine a U.S. Army Veteran, a Yale graduate, an investor, an entrepreneur and a gourmet food truck pioneer? The answer: Jeff Kelley. No, he isn’t five different people, he is just one person, and one extremely interesting person at that. I first met Jeff Kelley at UnCurbed DC, “a traveling restaurant that brings the enjoyment of the food truck experience off the curb and into various vacant spaces.”.

Tragedy Inspires Most Tasteless Pitch Ever

Bad Pitch Blog

'You won''t be surprised to learn that the Bad Pitch blog was the last thing on our minds during the horrific shootings in Aurora, Colorado. Like the rest of the nation, we took pause and our thoughts went to the families of the victims. In the aftermath we assumed, naively, that the nation''s collective shock would stop anyone in their right mind from trying to tie their pitch into this tragedy.

Why “You Stink” Headlines Always Get The Click

Waxing UnLyrical

“Why you stink.” These headlines always seem to magically know more about that thing we’ve always known deep down about ourselves, no matter how well we’ve resigned ourselves to it, shut out the world’s criticism of it, or – er – deodorized it. Hope springs eternal. We all know we’re not perfect… even at the things everyone we meet seems to think we’ve perfected.

When “Everyone” Is Your Audience

Waxing UnLyrical

On my way home from work yesterday, I was listening to NPR, and heard an interview with Debra Lee , the CEO of BET (aka Black Entertainment Television). At one point, she was asked who she defines as her competition, and she said (I quote): “Everyone. Anyone that’s fighting for eyeballs, whether it’s a cable network, video game, movie theater — I define my competition as any entertainment outlet that’s fighting for eyeballs.” Image: dietadeporte via Flickr, CC

Why Klout Doesn’t Measure True Influence

Waxing UnLyrical

I’ll admit that it’s fun to bash Klout. They are on the front lines of the Wild West of determining influence, and who is doing that influencing, online. Posts have been written ad nauseam (including on this blog, though they’re not the nauseating kind) on the plusses and minuses of Klout’s service , but I think I’ve finally nailed down what bothers me about the service (which I’m still a member of and will continue to use).

How Social Media Makes The World A Better Place

Waxing UnLyrical

I’ll start this post with a question for all my readers…. Would you agree that social media is faster than seismic waves? Think about the last major earthquake – didn’t a lot of us reading this post tweet the moment we felt the earthquake? It’s ironic, but instead of saving my life, I was busy tweeting about the “EARTHQUAKE.”. EARTHQUAKEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being in the Moment

Waxing UnLyrical

I never thought that relentlessly planning for the future would teach me a lesson on being in the moment. But it did. You see, I’m a list-maker. I can’t help it, that’s what I do. I use both technology and paper for my task lists. At work I have a to-do list in my email program. At home I use Gmail’s “tasks” to make (and cross off) personal to-dos.

Storm clouds gather. Even if you don’t live in the U.S., you probably heard of the unbelievably harsh storm – a super derecho or land hurricane, see pic – that hit many of us, particularly on the East Coast but apparently as far into the country as Indiana, this past weekend. C-O-N-T-R-O-L

'A few years ago I was having lunch with a reporter from The NY Times when he suddenly leaned forward, conspiratorially: "You know, Richard, you have a tough job," he said alarmingly. I was curious. "How''s that?" He shrugged. "Well, your client gives us all this information and we do whatever we want with it." After I used my inside laugh, I took another bite.

Ditching the Daily Deal

Guest post by Christopher Wallace. “Now I’ve… had… the time of my life…” A few weeks ago, I enjoyed one of the best massages of my life. You see, sometime last Fall, I bought a Groupon offered by a local masseuse. For $45, she was offering a 90-minute full-body massage. It’s hard for me to justify the usual $1/minute-or-more rate where I live, so the coupon seemed like a nice splurge to treat myself to.
