Jason Mudd Discusses Creativity on PR’s Top Pros Talk

By Maria Gimeno

“What we’ve got to do is help people prioritize and realize that great PR, great marketing comes from a big idea.”

Graphic used for O’Dwyer’s PR Report discussion with Jason Mudd.O’Dwyer’s PR Report featured Axia Public Relations’ CEO and Managing Partner Jason Mudd in its video series PR’s Top Pros Talk. Jason spoke about improving brainstorming sessions and adapting ideation sessions from an office environment to a remote one.

Everyone has creativity in them, and not everyone knows how to unlock it. For some, creativity comes naturally. For others, it takes a while for it to emerge. And how, exactly, do you reach your full potential with creativity? And what about in the remote environment?

Jason talked about the significance of thinking big to succeed and to not be afraid of disrupting the status quo. With the pandemic being the biggest disruption of all, Jason said corporate communicators should use this time to reinvent their companies and themselves.

“Those that think creatively and that can think outside the box and be disruptive in their own industry will always be valued and will always have a role,” Jason said.

With the evident change of pace in the industry, it’s expected that ideas also need to change. Time can be the assistance that’s needed to create and develop excellent ideas.

“What we’ve got to do is help people prioritize and realize that great PR, great marketing comes from a big idea,” Jason said. “And if you don’t spend time coming up with ideas and you don’t recharge and invest in your own personal mindfulness and your own wellness, you won’t have opportunities to do that.”

Without big and outrageous ideas, many inventions we have now wouldn’t exist. It’s important to think outside the box because it can lead to new innovations.

One tip Jason provided to help overcome a client’s hesitancy to get on board with an idea is make it seem like the idea was theirs to begin with “or they were part of the idea by including them in your ideation session.”

Doing things differently, whether big or small, can have an impact on your ideas. Taking a walk down the beach, driving a different route to work, or even putting your belt on backwards can stimulate an idea.

“If you do something a little bit different, it just triggers something in your mind that gives you a competitive advantage in many ways,” Jason said.
