#FUNFACTFRIDAY- January

This is it, folks! We have officially finished our first week of 2019. How has it been so far?
To celebrate the beginning of a new year, I have compiled some interesting facts about the marvelous month known as January.
January is named after the Roman god Janus, who was always shown as having two heads. He looked back to the last year and forward to the new one.
The original Roman calendar only had 10 months. January and February were not included, but were added later.
January in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to July in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa.
January 1st, 1776, the first American flag, the “Grand Union” was presented. Betsy Ross later added the stars in place of the Union Jack.
There are two zodiac signs for those born in January, Capricorn: December 22 – January 19 and Aquarius: January 20 – February 18.
As per a Scottish tradition, the first Monday of the New Year is the time to distribute gifts to the children. In earlier days, Christmas was celebrated for twelve days which ended on the 5th of January.
January 1st is both the furthest away and closest day to December 31st.
More couples separate or divorce in January than in any other month.
On a lighter note, it is also national soup month!
Speaking of wacky and random holidays…here are a few of my favorites:
            January 3: Fruitcake Toss Day
January 11: Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend’s Day
            January 16: National Nothing Day
            January 21: Squirrel Appreciation Day
January 28: Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day
Who knew there was so much more than just New Year’s, resolutions and cold weather!
