How to prioritize resources to stay on top of your biggest PR goals

It can be too easy to lose sight of your long-term goals amid all the daily tasks of a PR career. Here are some tips to make sure you keep your eyes on the big picture.

After the New Year comes and goes, too often PR pros are guilty of letting go of those big picture goals that they had set out for the year.  You find yourself mired in the weeds of day-to-day affairs.

Big picture goals aren’t like your tactical goals, such as posting on your blog or social channels more frequently. Instead, think more along the lines of gaining more customers, improving customer-retention numbers or increasing public awareness of an issue in order to secure funding.

Make it a habit—or better yet, a priority—throughout the year to check in on these big picture goals. Here are a few tips to stay on track:

1. Set reminders.

This might seem simplistic or obvious, but ask yourself: How many times have you gotten sidetracked on new projects that had little or nothing to do with your big picture goals?

Set yourself a monthly reminder on your desk or calendar to periodically check back in on your goals for the year. For your clients, this could mean setting quarterly meetings or making overarching goals a part of your regular status calls to ensure you don’t lose sight of the finish line.

2. Avoid “shiny object syndrome.”
