Instagram has reached 500 million users—easily one of its biggest accomplishments.

The photo-sharing platform has established itself as one of the world’s largest social networks, and it will probably be the next one to reach 1 billion users. Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp have achieved that level of popularity, and Messenger (another Facebook asset) is quite close.

Facebook bets pay off

When Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion, many social media marketers couldn’t believe it. Although Google bought YouTube for $1 billion, its video capabilities made it a sound investment. Instagram has more than proven its value; it would be much closer to what Facebook paid for WhatsApp ($22 billion) than the original $1 billion.
